"for just a little more money..." hits the nail on the head. Unless
everyone stopped buying new vehicles (until the car companies started
offering the type of goodies we all end up installing ourselves)
they're gonna produce the best cross between performance/cost that
they can move off the lot.

The last 5 years have shown us entering into a era similar to the mid
60's thru '70. The manufacturers are again offering vehicles with a
focus on serious performance. Who knows....maybe we're not to far off
from having engines comin' down the assembly line complete with chrome
valve covers and chocked full of hot rod parts.

I think part of it also has to do with the fact that most really
*want* to add those types of parts themselves. It's kinda cool
knowing that the 15 hp you got from that exhaust system install was
done by your *own* two hands. Most true auto enthusists have a need
for their vehicle to be a little bit different from everybody else.
At least for me that's why I bought a '97 Dakota....or any year Dak
for that matter.....just a little different from the standard.

     Just my 2 cents.

<snip> for just a little more money, they could put out a really
quality product? I have this nagging thought sometimes that goes
something like, "If this stuff was really good for the
car/truck, the manufacturer would have done it that way to begin with."

  Am I missing something?
