Let's see if I can remember my high school physics...
When you cut the resistance in half, it's going to double the current. If you're using a stereo that expects 8 ohm speakers, it's probably a good idea to have 8 ohms across there. You can do this by wiring two 4-ohm speakers in series, or just adding a 4-ohm resistor. If you try to operate it with only 4 ohms, you might let the magic smoke out of your radio, and once the smoke is gone it won't work any more.
Personally, I would probably replace the stereo as well. But that part's up to you.

Does anyone know anything about the stock sound system ? I have a 1994 with
a stock 4 speaker AM FM tape deck . The speakers are 8 ohm , I want to put 4
ohm speakers in and leave the stock stereo in . It is almost impossible to
find high performance 8 ohm speakers .
