Hi all:
I've been following the pulley debate for a bit now and have a question for
y'all. There seem to be so many of you interested in them that you might have
enough to have them "custom" machined. While this was brought up in the
discussion, I was thinking that there is a way that anyone (with any motor)
could join in at one point.
The best way (in my opinion) to save money here is to actually break the
pulley's up into two parts: a "hub" and a "rim". The hubs could be cast
aluminum and all (basically) identical (a very cheap manufacturing method).
They could even be made in a custom form (ie: Pentastars w/ "DML" on them, or
any other spoke design) and finished however you like (polished, brushed,
blasted, etc.). The concern on the "rims" seems to be toughness. Personally,
I'd want steel or stainless steel if I were doing this (which I'm not ^_^).
The rims could be lathed for whatever motor you had and in whatever diameter
you wanted. Bolt the rims to the hubs and have them balanced and you have a
great looking set of custom pulleys.
You may end up paying slightly more (or less) than a brand name of pulleys
but you'd have the knowledge that only your fellow DML'ers who ordered them
with you would have as great looking of a set as you did.
An observers $.02
