I was curious about that myself, the 2.5" in and 3" out thing... What
their telling me is the larger pipes downrange from the muffler helps
improve the exhaust sound. Does this make sense or am I just getting
exhaust smoke blown up my ----??
As a side note, I was also told the pipe diameter is only important up to
the Cat... The theory was that all the "important" back pressure issues
happen before/at the cat and everything after that was relatively
unimportant. Again, I don't know... What do you think of that???

When I spoke with Flowmaster they recommended the 50 series SUV muffler for
my 98 318 4X4. I got the 2.5" in and 2.5" out. It has a low rumble to it,
not too loud. I don't think adding a 3" pipe after the muffler will do much
good unless the rest of your exhaust system is 3" as well, which if you did
you would notice a loss in your low end.
