I have heard that, theoretically, all else being equal, the only thing a V8
loses over a V6 in terms of efficiency is increased friction from 2 extra
cylinders and increased rotational inertia on the crank. If you could
equalize all of that, V8's and V6's would have the same efficiency. The gas
being pumped into 2 extra cylinders provides just as much power per
compression as the other cylinders, so the extra gas argument is invalid.
