Audio advice? (Quality of X-Plod system?)

Ok, I suppose *technically* this is OT, but arguably I could be
buying this system for my Dak... :-) Actually, most of this would
apply to a Dak anyway...

I'm starting to think about what sort of audio stuff to buy for
the cuda. Right now, it has absolutely nothing, so I'm starting from
scratch here. I have two 6x9 cutouts in the rear of the car so I
guess its pretty much a no brainer to plop a couple of 6x9s in there.
However, I don't have any other speaker locations. I don't really
want to cut up my door panels to try to install some speakers in there.
I suppose I might be able to put a couple of tweeters or something
up in the headliner, but seeing as I don't currently *have* a headliner,
I don't know for sure. So, what I'm thinking is a couple of 3 way
6x9s, a head unit, and perhaps an amp and a subwoofer. I'm not
interested in playing music loud *at all*, I am interested in quality
sound. (But not wallet-wringing quality, mind you!) ;-) For a
point of reference, I think the stock system in my Dak is just fine,
and the Infinity systems in the newer Daks are certainly more than
enough quality for me. My only firm requirement is that the head
unit has to be able to play MP3s, and I don't want to spend a
fortune! (not even a small one) ;-)

I was surfing on Crutchfield today and I see they have a deal
where if you buy a Sony Xplod system, they will give you $75 to
spend on anything else at Crutchfield. A "complete system"
consists of a head unit, an amp, and a pair of speakers or a
sub. So, being the cheapskate I am, I figured I'd do something like
buy a head unit, amp and speakers, then get my check and use that
cash to help pay for a sub. Catch is, I only have till sept. 30 to
decide wether I want to do this or not, when the "rebate" runs out.
I also didn't realize how expensive subs are. I can get an $80
xplod 12" but I guess you need an enclosure for it too, which doubles
the price.) :-( Those "bass tubes" are about the same price.

So, I guess my main question is, "is the Xplod stuff any good?"
Also, will the sound quality be OK with just 2 3-way 6x9s providing
all the sound? Do I need a sub? Can I use the same amp to
power the sub and the spakers? How do I choose the components
to match? Do I just need to worry about their max wattage input?

I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for. (i.e. x2 amp or x4?)
I'm tempted to just get the cheapest version of everything
and hope it sounds ok! :-P
