Actually Paul, I haven't a clue about the hill. Never been up there
myself, I mentioned your situation to my father and he suggested I ask. My
uncle's got a horse farm up there and is a surveyor. I'm told that when
you're climbing, all you see is sky in front of you.
The mechanic that rode with you may be somewhat right, but it doesn't
excuse his behavior. I've noticed that mine will sometimes kick down and
sometimes won't. And sometimes it'll kick WAY down, rev up into the 4000+
range, and really scare the carp outta me :) In a good way.
The shifting back and forth is definitely the transmission hunting.
Happens to me too. Sometimes we have to tell it what to do.
