Limited Slip Differential?

I'm not to smart on differentials, but...

In my racing I tend to wear out an OEM LSD in about a year. So I'm going to
use an aftermarket LSD next time. My question is, If I got a new truck from
the factor, do I need to have a factory LSD in place in order swap in an
aftermarket one. Or can I add an aftermarket LSD unit to an open diff?
