removing drum brake

I am going to need to remove my brake drums to slide my axles out a bit but have always had problems doing so. Do I need to remove the plug on the back side and rotate the adjuster screw down or up to loosen the grip of the shoes to the drum. Also, any other ideas on how to remove the drum?
