Compression Fittings On Brake Lines

Yesterday I had a customer come in and request a length of brake line
and a couple compression fittings. I asked what he needed the fittings
for and he said the brake lines. I politely refused to sell him
compression fittings because they are unsafe for use on brake lines.
Told him I could sell him unions and flare nuts, and rent him a flare
tool. He said ok then its not for the brake line - I looked at him and
said - but you just told me they were for brake lines. He was not happy
and left the store without buying anything. A co-worker of mine
disagreed with me and said I should have sold the guy the fittings.

Now correct me if I'm wrong - but everything I've ever been told about
brake lines is that you never ever use a compression fitting, because
they can blow off.

I feel I did the right thing - but I thought I would get some other
opinions from the rest of the List.
