Pinging

My truck has pinged under load with 87 octane or lower since new. I've
had no problem at all when I'm running a full tank of 93 octane.

I did notice that back in Montana (no smog laws) the 'Regular' pump
gas was 85 octane - and that did ping almost whenever I'd hit the GO
pedal. I used mid-grade 87/88/89 octane most of the time I was there.
Premium here in CA is 92 or 93, in MT was 91 or 92. Gas was cheaper in MT.

If the continuous sound is indeed the injectors, one reason I haven't
seen anyone mention might be that the '96 and later models switched to
an open-loop fuel circuit, whereas the '92 thru '95 model has a fuel
return and a high pressure fuel ring. It's possible that the opening
and closing of the injectors causes something akin to a water hammer and
"ringing" of the hardware. There's more volume in the closed-loop (return)
system to absorb the shock waves - thus no perceptible sound.

If the engine truly is pinging due to pre-ignition almost all the time,
I think you'd see it by reading the plugs - if they're quite white or
damaged you are indeed pinging, and something (fuel hi-side pressure
too low) is WRONG! If they plugs are normal, it can't be pinging too
terribly often - LIVE WITH IT [until your motor self-destructs]!
