So I've had my truck for six months now, I've done
all the cosmetic and interior mods I want to do,
and I'm starting to look at performance.
I went to Canadian Tire, bought a 10" K&N (height
unknown, I'd guess around 2.75") and a Mr. Gasket
cleaner (p/n 9791, I believe). The install went
smoothly enough, after cutting the breather hose
and filing down the plastic nipple.
Now, I get the desired roar with throttle wide open,
but at half-throttle, or anything less than WFO, I
get what starts out as a high-pitched whistle, and
changes to a sucking sound (if you want to hear it,
bite your lower lip and inhale sharply) as the vanes
open. I noticed that the original hat had a plastic
fin inside, parallel to the direction of the large
intake hose. I put in a slightly larger plastic fin,
to see if it would attenuate the noise.
What I got, instead, was an interior that smells like
melted plastic. I've also experimented with duct tape
in a few strategic places, to see if that would eliminate
the sound, or at least mask it somewhat. No luck.
So, now I turn to you: Is this normal? Anyone else
experienced it? Or, better still, eliminated it?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
cheers,
mike
