A buddy of mine is looking at a 99 ZR2 2 door Blazer (can't afford the
Durnago, which he wants more), so we go down to Port Chevy in Port
Coquitlam. They are also advertising these "SS 327" pickups. I look at
one in the showroom: reg. cab, shortbox, 2wd, SS 327 decals, 5.3L
engine, auto. trans. air tilt cruise (no pwr. windows or locks), bench
seat, lim. slip 3.73 gears. Price: $29000 ($300 more and you have my
Club Cab, loaded R/T). Get this, they add these American Racing 16x8
rims with 315/60/16 Sport Truck T/As tires and nail you $3200 !!! Yep,
this thing is $32200. Sure....sign me up...what a great deal....NOT!
So, Mr. Slimysales tells me how fast they fly and how no truck can keep
up to it, and that the Flowmaster exhaust they are adding will just
make it haul butt even more, the engine is high-performance, this is
the first year you could get the "big" motor in the "little" body,
blah, blah, blah. I ask if he thinks it's a little pricey considering
the cost of the rims/tires and no pwr. windows/locks. He says it's
meant for the young guys who want big power. My R/T is parked right out
front (all the other salesman and some customers are checking it out),
and I say, "Tell you what. Let's take my truck and your SS out front,
and I'll SHOW you who's faster." He balks at that and says his buddy
has an R/T and his ext. cab 4wd Chevy can take it. I laugh in his face
and say I'll race you when you get your miracle exhaust put on. He says
he's got more horsepower. I tell him I got more torque and better
gearing. Anytime, anyplace, Cheeseboy! Yeah, it was a battle of egos,
but hey, I got the REAL sport truck here. I tell him that the new
Lightning is the only thing that can give me trouble. He agrees, but
says Chevy is bringing out a, are u ready for this?, 8.1 liter! And
they will put this into a 2wd, half-ton? Whatever!! Go play with your
Extreme buddy (they stickered as much as my R/T). :O)
